Curaçao – the C of the ABC islands

If you haven’t heard of Curaçao, I think you might be living under a rock… 🙈 no offense… This little island 🌴 is making itself known for sure.

Curaçao is part of the Netherlands Antilles, the C of the ABC islands of the Caribbean. An island with a familiar feeling to us Surinamese people, hence the reason we go there often. Family, friends, work… most of the things we come to visit and do on this beautiful island with the sun ☀️, sea 🌊, and sandy beaches 🏝.

Apart from their diverse cultures and different languages, we most of the time feel at home 🏡. My own saying: “Curaçao is my home away from home.”

I’m always into food, and as soon as I get the chance to explore the food culture and many restaurants, I will do so. Because Curaçao is very tourism minded, the diversity in cultures also shows in the diversity of restaurants.

I will separately share my experiences on the eight (yes 8!) restaurants we’ve visited on this trip to Curaçao.

Here’s the list –

And a little about the restaurants:

  1. Restaurant & Cafe Gouverneur de Rouville:

While you enjoy your lunch, dinner or just a beer or coffee, the big ships pass by at only a few meters distance. Gouverneur ‘de Rouville’ or simply ‘De Gouverneur’ is located at the Otrabanda waterfront and serves a rich variety of international dishes. A ‘must’ for every visitor of Curaçao.

  2. Oporto Restaurant:

Oporto Restaurant is a striking wooden structure on the banks of the Waaigat, an inland lagoon in the historic city center of Willemstad. The perfect combination: a marvelous sight and a taste of Curacao best ribs or our international cuisine!

  3. Kome Restaurant:

Located in the historical district of Petermaai, Kome features a chef driven menu where worldly cooking techniques lay the foundation for the creative freedom Chef David and Pastry Chef Susan live for in the kitchen. The chefs cook things that make them happy, like homemade sausage, tasty sandwiches, curry’s or stews; fried chicken, fresh bread, pie or something altogether surprising and new.

  4. The Greenhouse Bar & Restaurant:

The Greenhouse Curaçao started by three Lebanese Brothers. They know how to combine Caribbean food with the Mediterranean delights of, among others, the Lebanese cuisine. The Greenhouse offers tasteful Caribbean & Mediterranean dishes.

  5. Scampis:

Scampi’s is known for it’s daily fresh fish, a variety of seafood and life Caribbean rock lobster. Their Chef and attentive staff welcome you to savor excellent cuisine and relax to the gentle swaying of the waves and enchanting tunes performed daily by local artist, in an intimate setting at one of the island’s most historic monuments. Located in the Historical Waterfort Arches in Punda.

  6. Papagayo Beach Club:

The team behind the well-stocked beach bar will keep you hydrated as you work on your tan. Throughout the day the Club’s restaurant serves casual beach fare – appetizing bites to nibble on or more ample dishes before kicking off your night out.

  7. Landhuis Dokterstuin:

Restaurant Komedor Krioyo in Landhuis Dokterstuin serves delicious creole meals in the casual garden. A nice location for all kinds of receptions and private parties.

  8. Katsu

A Japanese restaurant with an extensive Sushi Bar, where you see how our master chefs prepare your fish.
Besides sushi, the hot kitchen offers many dishes.

As this was also get-to-know-the-island-better trip, my cousin and I went to several beautiful locations. Which of course I will share with you too. Some of the locations I will go in on a little further in other blog posts, others will just be shared on the list below with a few pictures.

You will want to dive right in the clear blue ocean of Sea Aquarium Beach, and you can get that beautiful new bikini first! There is always something happening at the BLVD, every hour of the day!

  • Pietermaai District:

Pietermaai District’s allure draws business men, artists, students and travelers alike. Fondly referred to as the “SoHo” of Curaçao, its stunning architecture is likely to catch one’s eye. It’s a neighborhood full of mystery, magic and fun. Only in Pietermaai District.

Cas Abao offers you a white sandy beach, crystal clear waters, waving palm trees and many gazebos for shade. The beach combines a natural country setting with all the conveniences of a full service beach.
