Bi-weekly column [in SHAPE fitness & more]: A lot of people spend hours on a treadmill. Why?

Some find it the easiest way of exercising. When you goal is fat loss, burning enough calories will have a significant impact. How does it work? The best way to lose fat is to create a calorie deficit by burning enough calories through exercise and cutting calories you eat.

How often should you do a cardio workout?
Truth be told: Probably 5 to 6 workouts a week. Aim for at least 45 minutes of exercise. Also choose a combined program that has cardio and strength exercises.

We know every person has their preferences regarding certain training programs. Now what is the difference between a workout with the same cardio movements the entire training, such as hitting a treadmill and a workout with a mix of cardio and strength exercises. The first workout could get you bored easily. And you would probably have to do extra toning exercises another half hour. The second workout therefore challenges you. And because it’s a mix of cardio and strength you’re done in 30 to 45 minutes. So don’t waste to much time on cardio alone. Cardio alone may cause you to burn fewer calories overall. Strength training builds lean muscle mass which increases your metabolism and decreases fat.

One more thing about cardio. When training at a low intensity level your body uses fat as it’s primary fuel source. Training at a higher intensity level however may increases calorie burning but there’s also a downside. Because your body is brought under a great amount of stress, your body also releases a steroid hormone called Cortisol.

In our next blog we’re going to talk about the steroid hormone Cortisol.
